SEA-SIGHT: DAY TWENTY (A REFLECTION) - Make it stand out helen frankenthaler, mountains and sea (1952) when I received funding for sea-sight in the last breath of 2020, it came as a total, epiphanic shock. I had begun conception of it two years previous, but upon finalising its infrastructure, had sheltered it somewhere in the invisible regions of my mind—not because I was indifferent to it, nor even because I had more urgent preoccupations, but simply because it was then only a private satisfaction, a tepid study of my position in the world as a poet, and a theoretical inquiry posed to the tenets of the poetic medium. my poems, at that time, were windows by which I glimpsed at the wideness of the world—a study of how its measures could collapse to fit into the span of a page, and how the page must insist towards an infinity so that it may justify its starving, egotistical, manic appetite for its subjects. the art was something I loved and clung to with an intense, but wandering, devotion. I had only begun to draw upon the great endlessnesses of language. I see in my poems of that time a truth of disparity—that I could write a space in which to house the various natures I perceived in the world, and in myself. in my proposal, I wrote: There is something strikingly vulnerable about the coastlines in which these islands pledge their faith, their livelihoods, and the foundations of their lives; should the earthquakes come as long predicted, their forms will be relinquished into the ocean, and what has been carved at and shaped for centuries into a infinitely rich world will be lost. The ocean, and its conjurings of the abyss, are at once something to be revered and feared. In tribute to own the coastline as it is in this moment, its shapes and crevasses and holdings in which thousands of stories congregate, I’d like to dedicate the poems to this landscape. I wrote my poems in the occasional overcome of glorious world-seeing. lines streaked by the soothe of landscape outside train windows, my mother’s shoulders in her wedding dress, open palm of a man I loved. they were the private iconographies of my transfiguring speculations, but whatever magic innate within them was inscrutable to me. and when the reality of undertaking sea-sight occurred to me, it initiated an unprecedented fear of inability; I do not know from where poems come. I do not know how my hand proves the tangibility of idea. I have started and ended so many poems not knowing where I have been inside them—only that I trusted the underlying vision that held me in its thrall during those wonderful moments. now, with this new undertaking, I would have to be servile to the volatility of my thinking. I would have to trust that I could do this work, this work that I do not set in order, but that which holds me, fleeting, in its absolution. it has been a little over half a year since. in that time, I’ve driven the two mirroring coastlines. the fishing docks, the seawalls, the austere torii facing westward under january snow, the insistent tide, the morphic moon, the firs, the stones, the quiet bones of seashells, the illuminating forces of blue. I crossed the pacific with more ease than it takes to cross a single framed image in the mind. I’ve spent twenty days chasing the sea. to write about these places with the ink of the moment, with the mind tangible as it coerces itself into the singular vantage of perspective, it has been an immense, generous privilege. I want to spin, looking at this place, to let the eye scan horizontal, dizzy as cursive, around and around until the peaks scratch at the skies in furious motif, and the water melts into the brightness of blue. I am cross-legged on the dock with a custom dream of questions. (liberty / and love, not truth) it strikes me that I am perhaps meant to write the history of these places, to place into my humble verse the massive totems of fact, to trace in concrete language the unfurl of the past as it alters form and becomes the future. this impulse to iterate the unimaginable seems easier here, where there rests something immune to change. by this I mean what I always mean, the shape of these things here, reflecting in themselves, without memory—the fingertip edges dipping into the water. bright, marshy green-growths draped like velvet upon it. the deafening shrill of summer heat, record-breaking this year. the impossible feat of going on further west repeatedly stems us, so we head inland for the night. the startling insistence of the high temperatures scratch at us, the car moving through it like a stone, so we stop at the first creek we see—a shallow, delicate thing pouring its crystal over the round pebbles and through the intrepid firs. I lie in the shallow glitter of its edges, watching the candy-coloured sky and feeling the glacial streaks comb against my back like baptism. something heavenly in its streak, evidenced too, by the thin squares of light that fracture into waltz. we settle at a nondescript fishing town called campbell river for the night—the cheapest motel booked online at the last minute, which turns out to be a sweet ramshackle of a lodge, riverside and overgrown with clovers, the doors barely closing all the way and the setting sun buttering the meandering water-flow. L and I lay in the long grasses, the lingering gold light with us. she speaks about rivers, of vietnam, and I’m reminded of all the mystical values these bodies of waters gain, as they move and take unknown shapes inside of us. SEA-SIGHT: DAY FOUR - Make it stand out at just before six am we awoke in anticipation of sunrise, but f parts the curtains and announces that it is snowing. we fall back asleep. driving fifteen minutes south to where we missed yesterday, bentenjima is a shrine on a small island at the end of a brief, perfect bridge that leads into the heaving pacific. the wind is fierce but because the shapes and figures—even the dark ones—are sacred, we stay. the red of the gates cuts into the grey like an iron burn. everything is as painting, because every aspect informs itself, but also leads the eye gently to what is to be seen next. it is hard to believe that this did not erupt from the utmost imaginings of what holy is meant to inscribe upon earthly matters. it is not that I felt something godly here, but that there is undeniable evidence of something being declared, in a voice that is larger than human, but perhaps still has human origins. it is very much like poetry. f forges ahead to photograph a small house and I seek the reprieve of a small cafe. inside are eight women who are startled when I walk in, and one of them sweetly—but brusquely—inquires about my identity. I explain to them that I’m a writer. illustrator? one of them asks. no, writer, I say, making the motions of inscription on a page even as I’m realizing that I might as well be mimicking illustration. she nods solemnly, and goes to report back to her friends. I overhear the standard repetitions, and then the shock of laughter, and then the smoothing down at the edges as they go back to whatever it was they had been talking about, presumably what they always talk about. the immense grace of routine in this wild world. I want to see oragahama lighthouse which is right in the middle of the nuclear explosion zone, and we are predictably stopped at every turn by men in strips of reflective neon. I notice a fluorescence of pink ribbon tied to branches, to poles, to strings stretched across the stark strips of wooden fences—they are warnings of what has been preserved longingly in the stream of time. it has been ten years. it has also been, in many ways, yesterday. I am not afraid of the radioactivity, but of perpetuating in this monumental human mistake. I drive down streets that grow ever heavier with thinking, with consideration, with memorial. I feel strange, as if invading. I feel a sadness that does not give its secrets away to words. I do not feel the presence of ghosts. what I feel is the presence of people. there are clothes hanging still in shops. pots still false with the memory of flowers. we make our way to an observation point designated on the map, a slight shoulder in the middle of the highway that looks out upon the sight of eruption, from a great distance. it’s difficult to tell the subject from the landscape, the new snow dusting the tops of trees, the inky mountains whose verges are lost to the papered clouds, the tunnels and their black mouths, our vertiginous height which sends my feet into nervous taps. along the coastline there are the preserved ruins of ukedo elementary school, so we move there in the dying day. I am very tired. the greyed-out expanse skyward seems to me very tired as well. the long thin road leading to the wreckage is ominous, replete with pits and falls, but the vehicle tumbles along the path, and we arrive at the edges of what had once been a structure meant to serve. it’s all blue. (alice oswald: be amazed by that colour it is the mind’s inmost madness) the column that reaches up as if gasping for air. the blown-out gates and crushed steel.
